In the article, Maze addresses the growing tensions between franchisees and franchisors during the Coronavirus economic shutdown. Most franchisors are taking steps to assist franchisees through delayed or deferred royalty payments and other fees. Some brands have not stepped up to show support for their franchisees.
Wasch litigates franchise disputes all over the country. He has seen that strong franchise systems which have shown support for franchisees before the Coronavirus pandemic have shown the same support (and even moreso) during the pandemic. However, brands that have proven to be adversarial to their franchisees have maintained that stance, for the most part, during these difficult economic times.
“If the relationship with franchisees was already in a weak state, having a health and financial crisis upon you is only going to make it weaker,” said Adam Wasch, an attorney with Florida firm Wasch Raines. He was speaking generally about franchise relationships in the era of the coronavirus.
